Eliud Kipchoge is getting ready to run the Berlin Marathon again in September. He’s a famous Kenyan runner who’s won this race four times before and even broke the world record in 2018 and 2022. Now, he’s aiming to make history by winning it for the fifth time.
Kipchoge, who’s a double Olympic champion, recently announced that he’ll be taking part in the Berlin Marathon on September 24, 2023. This race is special to him because he set a new world record there in 2022 by finishing in just 2 hours, 1 minute, and 9 seconds.
If he manages to win this marathon again, he’ll be the first athlete ever to achieve five victories in the Berlin Marathon. Right now, he’s tied with another great runner from Ethiopia, Haile Gebrselassie, who also won the Berlin Marathon four times in a row from 2006 to 2009.
Kipchoge’s decision to run in Berlin is part of his preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where he’s aiming for his third Olympic gold medal. He explained that returning to Berlin is the perfect way to get ready for this big event, and he’s excited to run the streets of Berlin once more, alongside thousands of other runners.
In Berlin, Kipchoge will face some tough competition, especially from his teammate Amos Kipruto, who won the London Marathon in 2022. Despite his incredible record, Kipchoge did face one defeat at the Berlin Marathon back in 2013, but it was only his second marathon ever, and he came in second place to another Kenyan, Wilson Kipsang
